About This Episode

We sit down with artist and storyteller Ron Recaido to dive into his deeply personal and powerful new show, happening right at Emo Brown Headquarters.

The Kwento Thesis: Chapter 2
Roots & Routes

This exhibit shares the story of 1970s Filipino immigration to America through the U.S. Navy — a journey that so many families took to start new lives and build new opportunities. Drawing from his own family’s experiences, Ron explores what it meant to leave everything behind, face the culture shock of raising kids in a new country, and make the sacrifices that shaped a whole generation.

Inspired by Filipino jeepney art and South Bay’s graffiti and hip-hop culture, Ron’s work is both a visual and historical narrative. He weaves together stories from the Philippines to San Diego’s South Bay — from Paradise Hills to Bonita — capturing the spirit of lineage, identity, and community pride.
